Managing the Challenge Programme

Our Service

The Western Trust is the first health trust in Northern Ireland to buy the Stanford License for the Chronic Disease Self Management Program and to develop an innovative self management training program to help people living with long term chronic illness and manage pain associated with their condition better.

Self Management is about empowering people living with chronic pain and long term illness to take control of their lives and reach their full potential in spite of their condition.

The “Managing the Challenge” of living with a long term condition course will teach people skills to manage all aspects of life with a long term condition including:

  • Pain Management
  • Relaxation
  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • Relationships with Health Professionals
  • Building confidence

It will enable people to deal with pain, fatigue, anxiety and stress by teaching helpful techniques such as: Exercise, relaxation, action planning, problem solving, better breathing techniques and by sharing experiences with others.

The program ‘Managing the Challenge’ is free for anyone over 18 years that has a long term health problem. The course is delivered to a group of 12-18 people over 6 weeks. It is delivered by 2 trainers that have conditions themselves or work with and or care for people with long term conditions and that have received training to deliver the course.
