Adult Learning Disability – Short Breaks

Short breaks are available through a range of options. They are offered to families on a planned basis utilising the resources available at the Respite Cottages in Shepherds Way in Derry City and Beltany House in Omagh.

Direct payments are also made to families for short breaks when this is deemed necessary or appropriate based on assessed need. Other residential and nursing facilities are also used on occasions to provide emergency breaks to enable our response to crisis in the community.

Families also benefit from short breaks such as access to befriending and sitting services. Some short breaks will also be provided through the Host Care scheme (see Shared Lives Short Term Adult Placement Scheme below).

 


  • Respite Care

    The unit provides a short break services for clients with varying degrees of learning disability. The facility covers Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane and facilitates clients who normally live at home full time with a carer. The unit provides a home from home environment and the clients are supported to enjoy the break. They are facilitated to plan and participate in activities of their choosing.

    Beltany House is a 3 bed residential short breaks facility situated on the outskirts of Omagh. The unit offers families and carers of adults with a learning disability the opportunity to experience a short break as their relative with learning disability is cared for in a homely and safe environment. Beltany House also provides a day care sitting service on a daily basis.

  • Shared Lives Adult Placement Scheme (Long and Short Term)

    The Shared Lives service provides a number of long term adult placements and short breaks through the provision of a host care service. This service is regulated by Regulation Quality and Improvement Authority. This short break provision provides a meaningful break for the service user and their carers. This type of Short Break is provided in the family home of the Shared Lives Carers. A Short Break can consist of a few hours per day, overnight stays or a longer break.
