Social Farming Awareness Week 2023
Social Farming Awareness week will take place from Monday 2nd October to Friday 6th October, with the opportunity to attend Social Farm visits across five different farms.
The open days are taking place across Northern Ireland on a variety of different farm settings.
- We start the week on Monday at Bradkeel Farm near Plumbridge. This farm has a dedicated one-acre site within the Campbell Family Sheep Farm found in the peaceful, idyllic slopes of the Glenelly Valley which is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of the Sperrin Mountains. Facilities include a kitchen garden with large polytunnel with raised beds providing opportunities to grow vegetables, flowers, fruits, and herbs. Currently a sensory and healing garden is being created.
- On Tuesday we will visit An Tobar Social Farm near Silverbridge. This farm consists of 40 acres of land, in the scenic setting of South Armagh’s Ring of Gullion’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a small herd of suckler cows, a horticultural nursery, and woodland offering a range of activities.
- On Wednesday we will be at Wingrove Farm near Saintfield. This farm has been in its family for over 30 years, it is a mixed farm consisting of a suckler cow herd, breeding of a flock of sheep, as well as chickens, pigs and grain.
- On Thursday we will be at Jigsaw Farm near Coagh. This farm consists of 120 acres of land nestled between the Ballinderry river and Lough Neagh. The main enterprise on the farm includes a suckler cow herd and sheep flock. There is also hens, ducks, pigs, goats, donkeys and Alpacas. The farm also has a large polytunnel for growing fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowering baskets to complement the seasons.
- Our final stop of the week on Friday takes us to McDermott’s Farm near Armagh. The former dairy farm lies just 1.5 miles north of Armagh town and although it’s close to the town, you still feel deep in the countryside. The farm keeps a range of small animals, also attached is the woodland where there is developing nature project. There is also a 28-plot allotment where participants can learn and grow seasonal vegetables and flowers.
We would be delighted if you could join us on one of these days to see a sample of what our farms offer and hear some stories of participants experiences on these farms.
All potential participants, families, farmers, referral organisations, or anyone interested in learning about the benefits of Social Farming are welcome!

Facilitated by Karen Torley the group made props and puppets from recycled materials which supported the theme of sustainability; the environment and the world around us. We talked about how everything in the environment is important and plays a special role. These points were shared through a performance and workshop to a class from Ardnashee which included a short rap song that went down very well.
After the performance the group decided to make a short music video of the song and so we filmed the video in St Columb’s Park, a favourite spot of the group.
We hope that you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed creating it!
