Our Volunteer and Work Experience office hosted two successful interactive events for prospective future Medical and Dental students within the Western Trust held at Altnagelvin Hospital and South West Acute Hospital recently.
Almost 100 students attended from 24 schools and colleges along with individuals hoping to study the Postgraduate entry course in Ulster University. Colleagues hosted interactive stations, allowing students to see what they do on a daily basis, from simulating a Cardiac arrest to reading X-rays, from ultrasound scans to respiratory simulation and intubation. Students had a unique insight into life as a medic or dentist and the opportunity to find out more about each specialty, an experience they relished.

“We are very grateful to colleagues right across the Trust who gave up their time to showcase what they do, to encourage our local talent to consider a health related career and to choose the Western Trust as their employer of choice. Thank you to everyone who supported our two evenings. I hope to see these students in the corridors of the Western Trust in years to come as proud staff members, providing care for patients from their own communities.”
“During each evening FY1 doctors hosted talks and Q&A sessions detailing their life as a junior doctor, what medical school was like and why they are so passionate about working within the Western Trust. The most heard comment of the evening was how privileged the students felt to have the opportunity to speak to, and interact with, staff at various stages in their career including current medical students and staff with years of expertise.”
