Who are we? We are the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust). We are located in the North West of Northern Ireland. We provide health and social care services across the council areas of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Limavady, in the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area.

The Western Trust has two acute hospitals, Altnagelvin Hospital is a teaching hospital located in Derry~Londonderry. It is the largest acute hospital outside Belfast, offering a wide range of specialities across other health Trust areas and across the border. The South West Acute Hospital, located in Fermanagh, provides a wide range of major acute hospital services to patients from Fermanagh and Tyrone and beyond.

Medical and Dental Education We have a proud tradition of providing excellent education and training for medical students, doctors in training and continuing professional development for consultants. The Western Trust has close links with Queens University, Belfast and Ulster University. It has teaching hospital status on both Acute Hospital sites. We work closely with the Ulster University’s Graduate Entry Medical School, facilitating clinical practice for students and supporting Clinical Academic roles in the Medical School.

Research and Development Our Research and Development Department is part of the Medical Directorate. We are based in the Clinical Translational Research & Innovation Centre (C-TRIC), which is located on the Altnagelvin Hospital site. Our goal is to support and promote high quality clinical research for the health benefits of our population and to play our part in the delivery of research studies, and to align with the regional research and development (R&D) strategy for the Health and Social Care (HSC) sector.
