The day to day work of a dental technician involves something different each day from dealing with new jobs to be completed from dentists to helping members of the public who come off the street needing help with broken dentures.
Each day involves a number of different jobs all with varying difficulty which can be exciting as it’s never the same, each job and each day is like a new challenge to learn from and improve work skills and knowledge.
My training involved travelling to Sheffield College for 2 years to complete a Level 3 diploma in dental technology which usually involves a further year placement in a dental lab. To begin training at Sheffield College you only require 5 GCSEs however I decided to go after completing my A levels. I can honestly say it’s been an extremely rewarding experience and couldn’t recommend becoming a dental technician enough to anyone who is considering a career in the dental field. It is a job that is not very well known but is very rewarding. I work in a busy laboratory and the earning potential is extremely good (average UK salary £32,000) and there is a wide scale shortage of trained technicians so I would say now is a very good time to start your training as a technician.
