Director of Adult Mental Health and Learning Disability Services Karen O’Brien recently opened the new Sensory Room at Valley Day Centre, Glendermott Business Park, Derry/Londonderry.
The new multi-sensory room will allow staff in the Valley Day Centre to offer a calm and relaxing area for service users.
Karen O’Brien said:
“I am delighted to officially open the new Sensory Room at the Valley Day Centre. The Sensory Room uses multisensory equipment to provide service users with a calming environment and assists our staff in providing the best care possible for service users. Our Sensory Room at Altnagelvin Emergency Department (ED) continues to be a great success and it is fantastic that the same idea and facility has now been adapted and implemented in a day centre facility.”
Sandra Boyd, Valley Day Centre Manager explained:
“We recognised the need for a Sensory Room for our service users, particularly those who have autism. Our service users now have the benefit from this facility as it offers a peaceful and calming environment during their care in the Day Centre.”
Sandra continued:
“I would like to thank the team at Creative Activity, who are local suppliers of sensory equipment for their assistance in designing and fitting the new room here at Valley Day Centre. It is such a fantastic facility and has already had a positive impact on our service users and will be a tremendous benefit to everyone using this facility now and in the future.”
Patrick Robertson, Day Care Worker at the Valley Day Centre said:
“We wanted to change this room into something that would be comfortable for our service users. As a Day Centre we recognised how beneficial the opening of the Sensory Room in Altnagelvin Hospital’s ED has been for service users and so we got in contact with Creative Activity. Kieran McMullan and his team listened to our ideas and helped us design a room which is an oasis of peace and tranquility for our service users. It really has exceeded all our expectations. Well done to Kieran and his team!”
