Update: South West Acute Hospital Access Update following Department for Infrastructure A32 Road Closure

The Department of Infrastructure has provisionally confirmed that the main A32 road between Cherrymount Roundabout and the South West Acute Hospital Roundabout is expected to reopen to two-way traffic this evening, Friday 24 July, with normal traffic arrangements resuming thereafter.
The shuttle bus service will remain in operation until 9.30pm this evening to support pedestrians leaving the hospital site.
The temporary blue light route will close to vehicular traffic by 5pm today, allowing pedestrian and cycle access routes to and from the hospital to be fully reinstated.
The Western Trust would like to thank patients and visitors, and the wider community for their patience and cooperation throughout the disruption this week. We also must thank our staff for your patience and co-operation in difficult circumstances and our teams on the ground who have dealt with these challenges throughout the week.
We would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support of our multi-agency partners, including NIAS, NIFRS, PSNI, Translink, PFI, NISTAR, the Education Authority, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, and our regional Emergency Planning and Resilience colleagues.
Their collective efforts have helped ensure that hospital services continued safely and that access to care was maintained throughout this period. We are grateful for the support shown by everyone involved.

The Department for Infrastructure’s closure of the A32 between Cherrymount Roundabout and Hospital Roundabout is now in place.
While access to South West Acute Hospital is being maintained, patients, visitors and members of the public are advised to allow additional travel time when travelling to the hospital.
Reminder of key information:
- Traffic travelling from Enniskillen towards SWAH via the Cherrymount Roundabout is affected by the road closure and diversion routes are in place. These have been signposted by DfI Roads Service.
- Access to SWAH via the A32 Irvinestown/Trory Roundabout remains open, although delays may occur due to increased traffic.
- Emergency and time-critical patients will continue to be facilitated through the dedicated emergency access arrangements on the ‘Blue Light Route’.
- A free shuttle bus service is operating between Erne Integrated College and South West Acute Hospital from 7.00am to 9.30pm daily while the road closure remains in place.
- The shuttle bus operates on a continuous loop, two-way on the designated Blue Light Route.
- Services run approximately every 10–15 minutes
- Passengers will be dropped at the hospital’s main entrance.
- All hospital car parks remain open.
The Western Trust continues to work closely with the Department for Infrastructure, emergency services and partner agencies to ensure safe and uninterrupted access to hospital services throughout the roadworks period.
We would like to thank patients, visitors, local communities and staff for their patience and cooperation during these temporary arrangements, which are necessary to facilitate essential road improvement works.
The Trust also reminds all visitors that abusive or aggressive behaviour towards staff will not be tolerated. Our teams are working diligently to support safe access to services during these essential Department for Infrastructure Roads Service improvement works.

Information update for South West Acute Hospital due to Department for Infrastructure works on A32 road from 20 to 24 July, 2026
The Department for Infrastructure has confirmed that the A32 Irvinestown Road, Enniskillen, between Cherrymount Roundabout and Hospital Roundabout, will be closed from Monday 20 July until Friday 24 July 2026 to facilitate essential road upgrade and resurfacing works.
Road diversions will be in place and delays are expected. Patients and visitors travelling to South West Acute Hospital are advised to plan their journey in advance and allow additional travel time when attending appointments or visiting the hospital.
Please note that there will be no access via the closed section of the A32 coming from Enniskillen for vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists during the works. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted by the Department for Infrastructure.
The Western Trust has put arrangements in place to maintain access for urgent and emergency healthcare services throughout the closure period. Public transport services may also be affected and anyone planning to travel by bus should check the latest service information directly with Translink before travelling.
The Western Trust would like to reassure the public that all hospital services will continue as planned during the road closure period. No cancellations or reductions in patient services are anticipated, and arrangements are in place to ensure patients can continue to access care safely and efficiently.
Due to the use of the Blue Light Route for Emergency Vehicles, this road cannot be used by pedestrians or cyclists from 20–24 July, due to health and safety requirements. Anyone intending to walk or cycle to the hospital should consider alternative arrangements in advance such as the use of the Shuttle Bus Service or car sharing.
Complimentary Shuttle Bus Service
To help minimise disruption and support access to South West Acute Hospital during the road closure period, the Western Trust will operate a complimentary shuttle bus service between Erne Integrated College and the South West Acute Hospital site. The shuttle service will run daily from 7.00am to 9.30pm from Monday 20 July to Friday 24 July 2026 and will be available for staff, patients and visitors.
Patients and visitors may wish to consider using the shuttle bus service from Erne Integrated College to the South West Acute Hospital site to help avoid delays and disruption associated with the road closure. Those using the shuttle bus should use alternative carparks (or Translink services to Cherryville bus stop) and please note all parking external to the SWAH site is not the responsibility of the Trust.
