The Western Trust is continuing its commitment to protecting some of the most vulnerable members of the community this winter through a targeted vaccination programme for people experiencing homelessness and those living in temporary accommodation.

Delivered in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA), Western Trust Vaccination Team and The Welcome Organisation, the initiative aims to ensure that individuals who may face barriers to accessing healthcare services can receive vital protection against seasonal illnesses.

The programme brings vaccination services directly into hostels and temporary accommodation settings across the Derry City area, making it easier for people to access vaccines and helping to reduce health inequalities within local communities.

This year’s programme will offer eligible individuals protection against flu, alongside the pneumonia vaccine, which is being offered through the service for the first time.

Michelle Doyle, Public Health Nurse for the homeless at the Western Trust, said:

“As we prepare for winter, it is important that everyone has the opportunity to access vaccinations that can help protect them from serious seasonal illnesses. People experiencing homelessness often face significant barriers in accessing healthcare services, which can increase their risk of becoming seriously unwell during the winter months.

“By working in partnership with the PHA, Trust vaccination team and The Welcome Organisation, we are bringing these services directly to people where they are, ensuring that some of our most vulnerable communities are not left behind.

“We have already identified a number of individuals who wish to receive their vaccinations and will be visiting hostels and accommodation settings throughout the area as part of the programme.

“Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you. We would encourage anyone who is eligible to take up the offer of vaccination and help protect themselves this winter.”

The winter vaccination programme forms part of the Western Trust’s wider efforts to support vulnerable populations and prepare for the increased health pressures often seen during the winter months.

By taking healthcare services directly into communities, the Trust and its partners are helping to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to stay safe, healthy and protected throughout the season.
