The Western Trust has expressed deep concern about recent incidents of violence and intimidation directed towards ethnic minority communities across Northern Ireland.
Chief Executive, Karen Hargan said:
“Our Trust is founded on equality, respect, compassion and collaboration. As healthcare professionals and members of the communities we serve, we stand unequivocally against all forms of hatred, racism and discrimination. There is no place for this behaviour in our society.
“To our staff, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds, I want to express my full support. You are valued members of our team, and your safety, dignity and wellbeing are of the utmost importance. We will not tolerate any actions that undermine this.”
The Trust remains fully committed to ensuring that all staff feel safe, respected and supported at work.
Karen continued:
“No one should feel unsafe or unwelcome in their workplace or in their community. We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone is respected, protected and included. We will continue to work closely with our partners, including statutory and community organisations, to challenge and eliminate all forms of intimidation and discrimination.
I want to thank our staff for their continued professionalism, dedication and compassion, particularly during challenging times. You embody the values that make our Trust a place of care, safety and respect for all.”
As part of ongoing engagement, Western Trust Senior Leaders have met with members of the Trust’s Ethnically Diverse Staff Network and staff from across the organisation. They have also engaged with MLAs, MPs, elected representatives, PSNI and Council representatives to listen directly to concerns, discuss the Trust’s response and reaffirm the importance of working together.
There was a clear and shared commitment from all involved to support staff, families and communities who may feel concerned or vulnerable at this time.
Trust Leaders, Elected Representatives and Partners said:
“At this time, we stand united in reaffirming our shared commitment to diversity, inclusion and respect. We are one community, and it is essential that we continue to support one another— , particularly those who may feel most vulnerable.
“Racism, hatred and intimidation have no place in our workplaces, our services or our communities. Together, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We will continue to work collectively to challenge and eliminate all forms of discrimination across the Western Trust area.”
