The Western Trust were delighted to host a recent health and wellbeing event at the Belfray Country Inn, Londonderry/Derry supporting individuals living with and beyond colorectal cancer. The event reflects the strategic commitment across Northern Ireland to improve cancer outcomes through holistic, person-centred care and enhanced survivorship support.

The event provided patients access to expert advice from key healthcare professionals from cancer services along with information on local cancer support services across the Western Trust area.

Organisers of the event, Roisin Roddy and Annie-Marie Crossan, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialists highlighted the importance of tailored post treatment information. Roisin and Annie-Marie explained:

“These events aim to provide our patients with the knowledge, confidence and support following their treatment. This will help them to transition back to everyday life as well as empowering them to maintain their health and wellbeing”.

Attendees highlighted the value of the event by stating how informative it was; indicating that they did not feel alone and how to seek help if they needed it.

Speaking at the event, Professor Raafat Malek, Clinical Oncologist, Western Trust said:

“This event is an important part of recovery, helping colorectal cancer patients to better understand the changes they may experience and how to access the right services to support their individual long-term health and wellbeing.”

Martha Magee, Macmillan Information and Support Manager, Western Trust said:

“These events play an important role in helping patients to access supportive services to include voluntary and community sector. These services help patients to navigate life after a colorectal cancer diagnosis to improve their overall physical and emotional wellbeing.”
