Our Community Stoma Specialist Nurses organised a River Walk and Stoma Exhibition on Saturday 3rd June 2023 as part of the SHAPE (Stoma Health and Preventive Exercises) recovery programme. The event was enjoyed by all and we were truly blessed with glorious sunshine and even better company for this short 5K walk along the Derry/Londonderry Peace Bridge.
Fiona Quigley, Team Leader Stoma Nurse Specialist (Community) said:
“Thank you to all the patients and their families, stoma pharmaceutical representatives, St Columb’s Hall, Rory for the great T-shirts with our special stoma logo design to show the three different stoma shapes and our colleagues for supporting this wonderful annual walk event.
“SHAPE is a weekly class and great opportunity for stoma patients to meet up and support each other and do some gentle abdominal exercises. The classes are led by a personal trainer Mary Rose McCready who herself has a stoma and is next level inspirational to everyone who has the pleasure of meeting her!
“We are extremely grateful for the dedication and commitment of Mary Rose in leading this wonderful programme culminating in the 5K Walk. It is important that we keep the momentum going on the benefits of physical activity to live well with a stoma and welcome new people to come to the SHAPE class. The class will be taking a break over the summer months and we look forward to seeing everyone back in September 2023.
“We hope to make this annual Stoma Walk bigger and better next year and look forward to welcoming walker in the local community to come and join us. Thank you!”
