Philip McCaffrey

Porter - South West Acute Hospital

When did you start the HSC?

2008

Why did you choose to work in the HSC?

I choose to work in the health service because an opportunity arose and I thought I would give it a go, it has been one of the best decisions of my life as I have made some longstanding friendships with work colleagues and met some fantastic staff and patients in my time.

Describe what you do?

As a porter I help patients during their stay in hospital, I transport the patients to different areas of SWAH for their clinical needs with kindness and empathy, and I am respectful of their abilities and needs.
I always try to interact with the patients and say hello with a smile, I like to have a chat and make them feel at ease and calm any nerves they may have.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy every aspect of my job, sometimes work can be challenging but it is also rewarding. The facilities in SWAH are second to none, it’s a great place to work and I would recommend the WHSCT to anyone thinking of working here. As I have previously said I have made some great friends since I started in 2008 and I work in a great team with great people.
