A huge congratulations to our Renal Service who have achieved a 1st overall rating in Northern Ireland and 2nd overall rating out of 65 renal units across the entire UK in the recently released Patient Reported Experience of Kidney care in the UK report.
Organised by Kidney Care UK and the UK Kidney Association, renal service users are asked to complete an annual survey and feedback on their renal services. Patients from 65 renal units took part with 11,647 respondents.
Participants are asked to rate the service. As well as an overall score, thirteen areas are surveyed including access to the renal team, support, communication, tests, shared decision making, transport to dialysis and the environment in the renal units.
Western Renal Units scored 2nd in the UK overall, 1st in Northern Ireland and was rated 1st in the UK for Tests, Fluid and Diet and Environment and in the top ten for 8 other areas.
Western Trust Chief Executive Neil Guckian said:
“I wish to extend my congratulations to our Renal Services staff on this huge achievement. I am not surprised that they have been rated Number 1 in Northern Ireland and 2nd overall in the UK given their commitment to providing a safe and high quality service to our patients.
Commenting on their achievements, the Renal Service added:
“We are delighted with these results from our patients and it is a credit to all the renal multidisciplinary team that we have achieved such excellent ratings. We strive to ensure the service we deliver is the best we can provide for renal patients in the Western Trust. We continually review our service and we hope to maintain these feedback scores in the 2024 survey, which will take place from mid-September to mid- November. We would encourage all our patients to submit a survey.”
The Renal Service is provided by a multidisciplinary team of Doctors, Nurses, Admin staff, Dialysis Assistants, Dietitians, Pharmacists, Podiatrists, Psychology, Renal Technicians, Social Worker and Support services staff.
There are two purpose-built Renal Units within the Western Trust, in Altnagelvin Hospital and Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex. Both Units facilitate the support and treatment of patients with kidney failure through haemodialysis 6 days per week.
Other services include pre-dialysis support and education for patients approaching renal replacement therapies, home therapies dialysis patients including peritoneal dialysis and home dialysis.
- Outpatient clinics for all treatment modalities including follow up post renal transplant.
- Acute in-patient dialysis is provided in Altnagelvin and South West Acute Hospital as required.
