People living with long-term respiratory conditions across the Western Trust area are being encouraged to take advantage of pulmonary rehabilitation, a specialist programme that helps individuals improve their breathing, increase their confidence and enjoy a better quality of life.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an evidence-based programme designed for people with respiratory conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, asthma and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), who are limited by breathlessness in their daily lives.

Delivered by the Western Trust’s Community Respiratory Team and Respiratory Nurse Services, including ILD specialist nurses, the six-week programme combines supervised exercise, education and peer support to help participants manage their condition more effectively.

Programmes are available across the Trust and take place in a variety of settings, including hospitals, leisure centres and community venues. Participants attend two sessions each week, led by respiratory physiotherapists and nurses who closely monitor progress throughout the programme.

“The exercise component includes warm-up activities, aerobic and strengthening exercises and cool-down stretches. Each programme is tailored to your individual needs, ensuring exercises are appropriate and gradually progressed over the six weeks.

“In addition to exercise, our patients receive education and support from a range of healthcare professionals and partner organisations. Sessions cover topics such as managing breathlessness, airway clearance techniques, inhaler use, medications, smoking cessation and emotional wellbeing. Participants also benefit from meeting others living with similar conditions, helping to reduce isolation and build confidence.

“Before joining the programme each of our patients undergo a comprehensive assessment to identify their needs and goals. A further assessment is completed at the end of the programme to measure improvements and identify any additional support that may be beneficial.”

Sharing her journey, Paula, who lives with COPD and emphysema, said pulmonary rehabilitation has transformed her life.

“My breathing got worse over time and I struggled with simple tasks like getting dressed and showering. Leaving the house was difficult because of my anxiety. Pulmonary rehabilitation was the best decision I made. I can now control my breathing, my anxiety has virtually gone and I can do everyday tasks without becoming too breathless. I would strongly recommend anyone offered pulmonary rehabilitation to take it – they won’t be disappointed.”

Patients with a confirmed respiratory condition can be referred to pulmonary rehabilitation by their healthcare professional. Anyone who feels they may benefit from the service is encouraged to speak to their healthcare team about referral options.
