Older people across Derry and Strabane are invited to come together to enjoy good conversation and company at the ‘Chat-Tea Library’ event, which will take place in Derry’s Central Library on Thursday 17 July at 11am.
For once talking in the library will be very much on the agenda, as part of an initiative building on the success of the popular ‘Chat Tea Train’ which proves an extremely popular way of connecting people aged 60 years and over.
Delivered through a collaborative partnership between our Multi-Disciplinary Team, Libraries NI, and the Age Friendly Programme at Derry City and Strabane District Council, the initiative aims to create a welcoming and supportive space for older residents to socialise and connect.
As well as offering a friendly environment for conversation and companionship, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about library services and initiatives, and how to become a member of Libraries NI.
Speaking after the event, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, said:
“The Chat-Tea Library is a fantastic initiative that brings people together in a warm and welcoming environment. Loneliness can have a significant impact on wellbeing, particularly for older people, and events like this play a vital role in fostering connection, friendship, and a sense of community. I would encourage anyone aged 60 to find out more about the initiative, and experience the benefits of social connection.”
Shona McEleney, GP Social Work Assistant, Glendermott Medical Practice said:
“This initiative is about creating simple but meaningful opportunities for older people to connect with others. We know the positive impact that social interaction can have on health and wellbeing, and the Chat-Tea Library offers a relaxed and supportive setting where people can meet new friends, share stories, and feel part of their community. We are delighted to be working with our partners to deliver this and look forward to building on its success in the months ahead.”
The event is open to all residents aged 60+ from across the city and district, the event aims to reduce feelings of isolation by promoting social engagement in an informal and friendly setting. Organisers hope the morning will inspire new friendships and provide a regular opportunity for connection.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to register through their GP practice in advance.
