As part of Health Literacy Month this October 2025, the Western Health Literacy Working Group (WHLWG), supported by the Western Trust, is launching a Health Literacy Baseline Survey on 1st October 2025.
The survey aims to gather responses from 1,000 people across the Western Trust area to understand patient and service user’s carer’s confidence in accessing, understanding, and using health information. Findings will help inform service improvements, reduce barriers to care, and promote more effective health communication.
Throughout October, WHLWG members, and the Health Improvement, Equality and Involvement Department will be present at key hospital and outpatient sites across the Western Trust to assist members of the public in completing the survey.
An online version of the survey is also available here. Hard copy version of the survey is also available by contacting the HIEI Department on 02871865127.
The survey is designed to take approximately 5-10 minutes and covers three key areas:
- Demographics – to understand who is completing the survey.
- Health Literacy Skills – including understanding health information, navigating services, and using digital health tools.
- Barriers & Support Needs – to identify areas where individuals may benefit from additional help.
All responses will be anonymous and evaluated collectively to ensure confidentiality. The survey draws on validated UK and European health literacy tools, adapted for the local context in Northern Ireland.
Chair of the Western Health Literacy Working Group Patti Thornton states;
“Health literacy is a vital factor in improving health outcomes, supporting self-care, and reducing health inequalities. This survey will provide us with a clearer picture of local needs and help ensure our services are accessible and effective for everyone.”
The Western Trust encourages all residents to take part and support the development of a more health-literate community.
