Children in urgent need of Adoption

12/10/2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped vulnerable children in need of a loving home. We are urgently seeking new adopters, as the numbers of enquiries and applications are at an all-time low.

The pandemic represents a time of severe pressure across society, which we know presents heightened levels of risk for some children. As a Trust we continue to prioritise the safeguarding and welfare of vulnerable children, however, we urgently need potential adopters to come forward. During this year’s ‘Adoption Week NI (12 – 18th October 2020), the Trust is encouraging more people to consider becoming an adoptive parent.

Catherine McKevitt, Head of Adoption and Fostering Services in the Western Trust said: “During the COVID pandemic we have placed and are still placing children with their adoptive families, however, the number of adoption applications in the Western Trust is at an all-time low. No one wants a child to have to wait any longer than they need to, to find a loving home. Children need a forever family now!

“Your adoption journey can start today by making that first move to find out more. We know that the first move can be the hardest, but there is support available to adoptive parents every step of the journey.

“In the current climate we are aware that there may be people who are worried about their finances and how it would affect their application to adopt. Please don’t let this deter you from contacting the adoption team. These are unprecedented times and we are taking this into consideration with our assessments and will discuss this with you.”

Catherine continued: “Adoption is a challenging but very rewarding route to becoming a parent. For children unable to return to their families, adoption provides them with a sense of belonging and a family for life.”

Family walking along road

We welcome applicants from all social, economic, religious and cultural backgrounds. Applicants must be over 21, they can be married or a single. Most importantly, they must be committed to providing a child with a secure, stable and loving family. Adoption is a service for children first and foremost and the Western Trust is committed to finding loving and secure families for life for children who are unable to remain with their own family.
