“I decided to become a volunteer as I have always wanted to go into a career within health and social care, more specifically Midwifery. I have worked as a Band 2 Healthcare Assistant within the South West Acute Hospital for the past two years which has given me a better insight into working within the hospital, however I wanted to gain more experience within the Maternity Ward setting.
“My volunteering helps others as I am able to provide additional support within the maternity ward through helping the maternity support workers by completing smaller jobs across the ward, such as making tea and toast for new mothers, stocking up rooms or taking time to listen to patients.
“I enjoy being able to support new mothers and the maternity staff, as well as learning more about the job role of a midwife which has been very insightful in concreting my desire to become a midwife as I start my studies in Queens University, Belfast this September.
“If you are thinking about going for a career in healthcare but don’t know how to gain experience, I would definitely advise anyone to volunteer. You are always welcome into the ward and everyone is more than happy to show you around. My time volunteering has really helped me to understand more about midwifery and it has been very rewarding being able to support those on the ward.”
