The Western Trust is committed to developing services to meet the diverse needs of the local population. It has created a new post to enhance the Services available to people with a Learning Disability.
Alison Bristow is a Learning Disability Nurse and her post is dedicated to supporting people with a Learning Disability and their carer’s throughout their dementia journey in line with the Regional Dementia Care pathway.
The focus of her role is to deliver quality, person-centred dementia care and incorporates promoting healthy active ageing; supporting people to live well with a dementia and supporting them to cope with the challenges that they may face as the disease progresses. Her role also includes working alongside families, carers, day services and care providers to provide practical advice on ways to enhance the individuals’ quality of life and well-being.
During Dementia Awareness and Action week, sessions were held with people with a Learning Disability to raise awareness and outline how they can lead healthy, active lives as they have a higher risk of developing dementia.
