The Emergency Department at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry/Londonderry is one of Northern Ireland’s busiest, looking after the most critically ill and major trauma patients from across the west of the region.
For this reason, our department is often very busy, and long waiting times are at times unavoidable depending on how serious your issue is. Please remember that the most seriously ill patients and those with life-threatening injuries and illnesses will be dealt with first.
If you find yourself or someone else to be in a life-threatening or emergency situation, call 999 immediately.
If you have an urgent but not life-threatening matter and are considering visiting ED, we would ask you to call Phone First on 0300 020 6000 where medical professionals will triage your call and advise you of the best course of action for your particular circumstances.
To accommodate as many patients as we can, we ask that you come alone where possible, observe social distancing, and to co-operate fully with our staff who are doing their best in often difficult situations.
The Emergency Department at Altnagelvin Hospital is located to the rear of the main building, and is clearly signposted throughout the site.
