Careers Night 2024
Our Volunteer and Work Experience office recently invited year 13 and 14 students to attend Open evenings for Medicine and Dentistry with over 150 students from 28 schools across the Trust geography attending either Altnagelvin Hospital or South West Acute Hospital. Students had the opportunity to speak to professionals in over 20 different specialties with staff hosting interactive stations where students had a chance to try their hand at skills. Students then attended a talk by a junior doctor who spoke of their journey into medicine and also had the opportunity for a Question and Answer session with medical students, FY1 and FY2 Doctors and other senior colleagues.
Wendy Doherty, Volunteer and Work Experience Coordinator said:
“We are so proud to be in a position to invite our local students to these interactive evenings and to showcase what life as a medic or dentist is like within the Western Trust. The students have said these evenings have gone a long way in cementing their decision to follow medicine or dentistry as their career path. They have seen aspects of the career they had never heard of before and got to hear first-hand what Trust staff love about their job. The interactive stations really brought to life procedures that form a part of every-day life as a medic or dentist”
Dr Sandra Mc Neill, Undergraduate Sub-Dean, Medical Education commented:
“I was delighted to see the return of this event, it was gratifying to see the student’s enthusiasm and energy”
The Altnagelvin event was opened by our Chairman Mr Tom Frawley and Chief Executive Mr Neil Guckian. Dr Tom Frawley, Trust Chair told students:
“We want you to leave this evening enthused about your future career within healthcare and with a clear insight into medicine and dentistry. Our vision is to see you return as an employee of the Western Trust.”
Thanks must be given to Wendy and Geoff for organising the evenings and to the many medical and dental colleagues and GP’s who volunteered their evening to inspire the next generation.
