Organ Donation Team’s Generous Donation Enhances Care for Critically Ill Patients Across the Western Trust
Critically ill patients across the Western Health and Social Care Trust are benefitting from enhanced comfort and support following a generous donation from the Organ Donation Team.
The Organ Donation Team has funded the purchase of 21 ‘Arjo Auralis 200’ therapy mattresses for the Intensive Care Units (ICU) at Altnagelvin Hospital and South West Acute Hospital, ensuring every critical care bed across both units is equipped with this specialist technology.
The donation, valued at £34,927, represents a significant investment in patient care and will support some of the Trust’s sickest and most vulnerable patients.
Designed specifically for patients requiring prolonged periods of intensive care, the therapy mattresses help improve comfort and support while reducing the risk of pressure-related complications during extended hospital stays.
The donation has been warmly welcomed by staff working within the Trust’s Critical Care Units.
Fiona Higgins Assistant Nursing Service Manager for Critical Care at the Western Trust said:
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Organ Donation Team for this exceptionally generous donation.
“This significant investment will make a meaningful difference to the care, comfort and wellbeing of patients receiving treatment within our Critical Care Units at Altnagelvin Hospital and South West Acute Hospital.
“Patients who require critical care are often among the most seriously ill in our hospitals and may spend prolonged periods in bed. Having access to specialist therapy mattresses across every critical care bed will help us continue to provide the highest standards of care and support patient recovery.
“We are extremely grateful for the Organ Donation Team’s continued support and commitment to improving services for patients and their families.”
The donation reflects the ongoing partnership between the Organ Donation Team and Critical Care services, with both teams working closely together to support patients and improve outcomes across the Trust.
Staff said the new mattresses will have a lasting impact on both patient experience and the clinical teams caring for them, helping to ensure the best possible environment for treatment and recovery.
