Celebrating Excellence in Social Work Across the Western Trust
We recently hosted its Excellence in Social Work Recognition Event, bringing together colleagues from across services who had been nominated for the Regional Social Work Awards 2026. The event celebrated the remarkable contribution social workers make every day, recognising the compassion, professionalism and commitment that positively impact the lives of individuals, families and communities across the region.
The event provided an opportunity to recognise and thank those whose work exemplifies the very best of social work practice. Through a series of award categories, colleagues heard powerful and often emotional stories of outstanding practice, leadership, learning, teamwork, innovation and advocacy. Each nomination highlighted the difference social workers make every day, often supporting people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
While the event celebrated individual achievements and team successes, one message resonated throughout the morning: social work makes a difference.
Speaking at the event, Trust Chief Executive Karen Hargan reflected on the extraordinary impact social workers have on the people they support, often at times of crisis, uncertainty and significant change. She acknowledged the compassion, resilience and dedication demonstrated across the profession and thanked staff for the difference they make every day.
Interim Executive Director of Social Work Stephen McLaughlin highlighted that excellence in social work is not confined to major achievements or high-profile moments. More often, it is found in the quiet, consistent acts of care, advocacy, professional judgement and relationship-based practice that help people navigate complex circumstances. He noted that the nominations provided powerful evidence of the values, commitment and expertise that underpin social work across the Trust.
For many in attendance, the most memorable aspect of the event was hearing the nomination stories themselves. These moving accounts showcased social workers and teams who had supported families through crisis, empowered individuals to overcome adversity, championed vulnerable people and inspired colleagues through their leadership, kindness and professionalism. There were moments of laughter, reflection and, for many, a few tears, as the depth of impact behind each nomination became clear.
Closing the event, incoming Interim Executive Director of Social Work Kevin Duffy reflected on the strength of the profession and the passion evident in every nomination. He encouraged colleagues to take pride in their achievements, celebrate one another more often and continue fostering a culture where excellence is recognised, valued and shared.
The event served as a powerful reminder that while social work can be challenging, it is also one of the most rewarding professions. Behind every nomination was a story of compassion, resilience, courage and hope, demonstrating the profound difference social workers make to the lives of those they support.
