Staff at Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex are joining forces with healthcare professionals across the UK to raise awareness of a short-term complication of diabetes in a national drive to improve staff knowledge and care.
Taking place from September 14 to 20, Hypo Awareness Week is an annual event which provides a platform for the diabetes community to launch local campaigns aimed at educating healthcare professionals about the signs, symptoms and treatment of hypoglycaemia.
Hypoglycaemia, also known as a hypo, takes place when the blood glucose levels of people living with diabetes drop too low. They can feel shaky, unwell and in extreme cases, can slip into a coma.
Ciara McCrystal, Community Diabetes Specialist Nurse for the southern sector of the Western Trust is based at Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex said:
“We are delighted to take part in Hypo Awareness Week along with colleagues from across the UK. We support patients in the local community across the Tyrone and Fermanagh area. We have set up an information stand in the front foyer of the hospital and welcome staff, visitors and patients to visit our stand and find out more about the signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia (hypo).”
“Our Community Diabetes team involving Community Diabetes Specialist Nurses and Dieticians were at the information stand from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday 16 September 2026 to answer any of your questions or concerns.”
