A local family has made a heartfelt contribution to South West Acute Hospital, expanding their ongoing efforts to support families experiencing pregnancy and baby loss, in loving memory of their daughter, Elise.

Elise was born sleeping on 20 April 2020 at Altnagelvin Hospital. Following their loss, Elise’s parents, Stuart and Toni, found comfort and support within the hospital’s Lavender Suite and from dedicated healthcare professionals. Since then, the family has committed to honouring Elise’s memory through annual fundraising and meaningful projects designed to support bereaved families.

This year marks a significant milestone as the family officially extends their initiative to South West Acute Hospital. The project includes the introduction of their Emergency Department dignity bags, known as “Little Bags of Love,” which are designed to offer comfort and practical support to patients attending hospital with concerns during pregnancy.

To date, over 500 dignity bags have been created and donated to Altnagelvin Hospital. Now, with the support of Lead Midwife of Southern Sector of Western Trust Brenda McCabe, and continued collaboration with Western Trust bereavement teams across both sites, the project is being introduced to South West Acute Hospital, creating a shared approach to compassionate care across the region.

The dignity bags are now being made available not only in emergency departments but also in Early Pregnancy and woman admitted with gynaecology related conditions, ensuring wider support for patients during vulnerable moments.

This year’s expansion has also been supported by another local family, the McCaskie family, who tragically lost their son Albie at South West Acute Hospital in 2023. Together, both families have helped raise additional funds, with dignity bags now presented in loving memory of both Elise and Albie.

In addition to the dignity bags, the family has donated 52 baby loss books for the South West Acute Hospital bereavement suite library, offering families ongoing comfort and support after leaving hospital and a privacy pram, provided through the charity 4Louis, for use within the bereavement suite and Neonatal Unit.

Privacy prams offer a dignified and discreet way for babies to be transported within the hospital, providing families with a compassionate alternative during an incredibly sensitive time.

Speaking about the donation, Elise’s family said:

“The world of pregnancy and baby loss is one no family ever wishes to face. By doing these projects in Elise’s name, we are able to say her name, honour her life, and continue being her parents in the only way we can. We hope these small gestures bring comfort to other families during such a difficult time.”

Brenda McCabe, Lead Midwife at South West Acute Hospital said:

“On behalf of the maternity staff at South West Acute Hospital we would like to thank Elise’s parents, Stuart and Toni, for this much needed donation”. Brenda highlighted the importance of compassionate environments and resources for families experiencing loss.

Brenda McClafferty, Western Trust Head of Midwifery added:

“Through these ongoing efforts, Elise’s legacy continues to make a meaningful difference—providing comfort, dignity and support to families when they need it most.”
