“I chose to volunteer on the children’s ward because I’m a primary school teacher. Even after 28 years in the classroom, I still love teaching and being around children every day and I feel privileged to do the work I do. So when I began my volunteering journey and was asked where I’d like to be placed, I didn’t have to think twice, the children’s ward was the obvious choice.

“My volunteering helps others in small but meaningful ways. My main role is offering tea or coffee to parents/carers who are sitting with their child on the ward. They’re often incredibly grateful for a simple cuppa and many thank me with such sincerity that it reminds me how much these little gestures matter. A lot of parents and carers are on their own, feeling upset, anxious or vulnerable and many appreciate having someone to chat to for a few minutes. I also love talking to the children, sharing a bit of positivity and reminding them how brave they are. Those interactions feel special.

“What I enjoy most about volunteering is the sense of connection and purpose it brings. Every Wednesday I’m greeted by Cathy, the Play Therapist, whose friendliness and support have meant so much to me since day one. She always makes me feel welcome and valued and knowing she’s there if I need anything gives me confidence in my role. I love feeling that I’m giving something back to society, especially within the health service where staff are under so much pressure. Meeting different children each week is a real joy, chatting with them, making them laugh and seeing them smile. I also appreciate being a listening ear for parents, grandparents, and carers. Even a short conversation can make a difference when someone is sitting alone, worried or overwhelmed. Another part of the role I really enjoy is helping Cathy with displays for Christmas and Halloween. I was very proud when the children’s work from my class was displayed. She often asks for my opinion as a teacher. I created a mental health and wellbeing display for the children’s ward, using fun, child friendly posters which I feel is so important in the modern world we live in. Being welcomed, supporting families, encouraging children and contributing creatively are what make volunteering so rewarding for me.

Katrina Volunteer“I always leave the hospital feeling uplifted, knowing I’ve given something back, whether that’s offering a simple cup of tea or coffee, having a chat with someone who needs it, or bringing a smile to a child who isn’t feeling their best. Volunteering has also been good for me personally. For those few hours, I step away from my own stresses and worries, I may have from time to time. The role is genuinely enjoyable and inspiring. A lot of people have asked me how I got involved and I always encourage them to give it a try. If you have even a little time to spare, you won’t regret it, I don’t think you’ll ever look back.”
