The Western Trust Community Equipment Loan Service is encouraging the return of community equipment with the launch of a new Text Reminder system from 01 May 2026.
The Community Equipment Loan Service is delivered in partnership with the Western Trust and the Business Services Organisation (BSO). This collaborative initiative is committed to providing high quality equipment directly to individuals across our community, helping them carry out daily tasks with greater ease and safety. The service is designed to promote independence and significantly improve quality of life for those who need support.
The equipment available through this service caters to a wide range of needs – from mobility and personal care, to end of life and palliative care. Examples include specialised beds, mattresses, and chairs, all aimed at assisting with essential day-to-day activities. Our professional staff, such as District Nurses and Occupational Therapists, carefully assess and order the specific equipment required for each individual, ensuring tailored support.
Operating from a dedicated facility equipped with a specialised Decontamination Unit and Drying Area, the service is structured to increase the retrieval rates of community equipment. By encouraging timely returns, we can clean and reuse items more efficiently, which not only benefits those waiting for equipment but also boosts the Trust’s productivity by reducing the need for new purchases.
Community equipment is an essential part of our healthcare system, especially as the population ages and the demand for care at home continues to rise. This service enables early intervention and rehabilitation, enhances overall quality of life, and offers valuable support to patients and their families during challenging times, including the end-of-life journey.
Paula Devine, Assistant Director, Community Care at the Western Trust, has extended her sincere gratitude to patients and their families for their cooperation and support of the service she said:
“Returning equipment as soon as it is no longer needed is vital, as it allows us to provide quicker access to those in urgent need and helps avoid unnecessary waiting lists. However, in order for the Western Trust to continue to maintain this quality service, we need to focus on improving the current return rate of equipment.”
“From 1st May 2026, an automated text messaging service will be launched to make our loaned equipment process even smoother for everyone involved. With this new system, you will receive a text message letting you know exactly when your equipment is scheduled to be delivered. In addition, you’ll get helpful quarterly reminders to confirm that the equipment is still in use.
“Each message will also include the telephone number for our equipment return service, which is T: 028 95 36 1500, so you can easily get in touch if you need to arrange a return or have any questions about your equipment. Equipment loaned to you by Western Trust will be delivered and collected free of charge.
Paula added:
“We hope this new service will make things more convenient and keep you up to date with everything you need to know. If you have any questions about the automated text messaging service, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for your support.”
