The Limavady GP based social work team celebrated their fourth anniversary of their thriving chair-based exercise programme this week located at Bethany Hall, Limavady.
Maureen Duffy, Maureen Duffy, GP based Senior Social Worker explained:
“The Chair-based exercise programme was launched in 2021 in response to a sharp rise in frailty, falls and social isolation following Covid 19 lockdowns. This initiative delivers seated exercises aimed at rebuilding strength, confidence and community connections. What began with just six participants has grown into a vibrant weekly group of more than 60 patients. Four years on, the programme continues to go from strength to strength, supporting patients physical, mental and social wellbeing.”
Lee Verner, Head of Service, Hospital Discharge, Social Work and Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) was delighted to attend the celebration event this week. Lee commented:
“This is a wonderful celebration and I am delighted to see so many participants involved in the community development project. This is a full circle moment for me as I previously managed the MDT social work team in its infancy. This chair-based exercise programme demonstrates how early intervention and preventive work enhances the overall lives and social wellbeing of so many people in our local community. Well done to everyone involved and wishing you continued success for the future!”
Original participant Dorothy Clyde commented:
“I have attended the chair-based exercise programme from the start. It helps me get out of bed on a cold morning and in so many other ways. My mobility is stronger, it improves my mental health significantly and it’s great to meet up with friends and make new ones. I have made so many new friends over the years. The chair based exercise programme makes such a positive difference to my life.”
