Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from CAMHS?

You can expect a safe space where you’ll be listened to without judgment. We’ll talk to you about how you’re feeling and work together to understand what’s going on and how we can help. You won’t have to go through anything alone.

How many appointments will I get?

That depends on what kind of support you need. Some people come just once a few times or longer, while others might come for longer. We’ll talk with you and agree together on a care plan that feels right for you.

How long will I have to wait?

Waiting times can vary depending on how many people need help and the type of assessment you are being offered. While you’re waiting, we’ll give you resources you might find helpful in the meantime.

What if I turn 18 during my time at CAMHS?

If you turn 18 while you’re with us, we’ll help you prepare to move to adult services (if that’s still the right support for you). We’ll plan this together with you so it doesn’t feel sudden or confusing.

What care and treatments will CAMHS offer me?

That depends on what you need – evidence based care and treatment will be provided based on the outcome of your assessment and reviewed in your care plan

How will this treatment help me?

The care and treatment is designed to help you feel more in control, understand your feelings, and find ways to manage whatever is difficult. You’ll learn tools to cope and feel more confident in yourself.

What do I do if I need urgent help?

If you’re in crisis or feel unsafe, you should speak to a trusted adult straight away – like a parent, teacher, or doctor. You can also call 999 in an emergency or speak to Lifeline on 0808 808 8000 (free and open 24/7).

Is there anything I can do to help myself?

Yes – there are lots of things that can help like writing things down, using apps to relax or track your mood, exercising, talking to someone you trust, or trying mindfulness. We can help you find what works best for you. Please see the resources available on this webpage

Who can I contact if I have more questions?

You or your parent/carer can get in touch with your local CAMHS team. Our contact details are on the Contact Us page. If you’re already working with someone from CAMHS, you can ask them directly too.
