The 36th Annual Western Trust Cardiology Update in association with the Irish Cardiac Society, took place in Fermanagh recently.
The Cardiology conference, was coordinated by South West Acute Hospital based Consultant Cardiologist Professor Monica Monaghan and covered a diverse range of topics from Cardio-oncology, Maternal-Fetal Cardiology and Cardiovascular-Renal-Metabolic Medicine. The conference was joined by Dr Sarah Fairley, an Interventional and Obstetric Cardiologist at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand. Dr Amareep Dastidar from Bristol spoke on the diverse range of heart attacks increasingly recognised and Professor Derek Connolly (Birmingham) discussed new treatments in heart failure.
The Meeting was delighted to welcome local speakers including Dr Eimear Darcy GP based in Omagh and Dr Sinead Hughes, Clinical Lead for Cardiology in the Western Trust.
The key-note lecture was delivered by Mr Tal Golesworthy, an engineer with Marfans Disease who pioneered development of the PEARS procedure and “fixed his own aorta”.
The Update welcomed more than 120 delegates from all over Ireland from an array of disciplines including primary care, nursing, radiology, physiology and hospital medicine. The Annual Cardiology Update provides a vital platform for healthcare professionals to hear the most up-to-date evidence and to translate this to patient care.
