Bereaved by Suicide Service

What does the Bereaved by Suicide service do?

The Bereaved by Suicide service aims to ensure that timely support is available to all those bereaved by suicide, and to encourage the development of support groups/networks. The service provides needs assessments as well as practical support and guidance around the feelings experienced by those bereaved by suicide, the investigation of the death, and the sorting out of affairs. The Bereaved by Suicide service also provides short term follow up support. Clients can also be referred on to statutory and/or voluntary helping services. The Bereaved by Suicide service will also invite bereaved family members to join the local support groups.

What staff work in the Bereaved by Suicide service?

The Bereaved by Suicide service is staffed with two Suicide Liaison Officers, covering all areas of the Western Trust.

The Suicide Liaison Officers are as follow:

Northern Sector (e.g. L/Derry, Strabane, Limavady) – Jennifer Sharkey 07385414442

Southern Sector (e.g. Enniskillen, Omagh etc) – Simon Lannon 07841569000

The Suicide Liaison Officers are available Monday – Friday, 9:00AM – 5:00PM.

Where is the Bereaved by Suicide service located?

In the northern sector of the Western Trust (Strabane, L/Derry, Limavady etc) the Bereaved by Suicide service is based in Old Bridge House, Glendermott Road, Derry/Londonderry, BT47 6AU.

In the southern sector of the Western Trust (e.g. Enniskillen, Omagh etc) the Bereaved by Suicide service is based in the Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex, 7 Donaghanie Road, Omagh, BT79 ONR,

How do people access the Bereaved by Suicide service?

Anyone directly affected by a death by suicide can avail of this service. The service is open to self-referrals as well referrals from GPs, statutory services, or referrals from community and voluntary services. When you phone your local Suicide Liaison Officer (see contacts below) you will be asked to provide a brief history and contact details. An initial meeting will then be arranged within 48 hours to identify support.

When is the Bereaved by Suicide service available?

The Bereaved by Suicide is available Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.
